If you had to make some extra money in the next few days, how would you
do it? Most retired people have a need to increase their retirement
income in some way. Some people decide to take on a regular part time
job to help sustain them during the early years of their retirement.
Other people come up with an idea for their own business, even if it is
on a small scale. |
But there are other ways in which you can earn some extra money as well. The key is in finding those ideas and making them work for you.
No two people are the same when it comes to talents, skills and abilities. And one of the best ways to unlock some additional income is to start from this point. What can you do that you could make money from? If you are good on a computer you might be able to set up a small and simple website that will bring in some money. How about creating one about your favourite hobby? If the topic is a popular one you could get a lot of visitors. With adverts by Google and various other products on there to sell, this could be a big success.
Of course if you don’t enjoy computers you will need to think along other lines instead. Perhaps you could take the free time you now have to give your house a good spring clean. Clear out anything you no longer want and put it to one side. Anything which might possibly be valuable in some sense should be properly valued by an expert.
Other items can go into a boot sale. These are great fun and most people find they have several of them nearby. Go along with your other half or a friend and enjoy the experience of selling your wares to other people locally. You might be surprised by how much such a venture can bring in during a Sunday morning’s work! This could lead to a longer term business enterprise when you buy items from other stall holder; auctions or eBay and then sell them on at a profit.
If you have a particular skill for creating something you could also consider going to a craft fair. Many people start off new businesses in this way, and you could be next. In addition to this, many hobbies can be turned into a way of making extra money. Some people are good at creating home made greetings cards for example. These are ideal for selling at craft fairs, and you can also get additional sales if you have a simple website made up and business cards with your phone number on for making sales in the future.
There are endless ways in which you can start bringing in another income during your retirement years. Some people end up retiring from full time work and then creating a complete full time business of their own instead. The only limits which exist for making money are those you think up yourself.
Of course it can be difficult to get started along these lines, which is why it pays to brainstorm some ideas before settling on something you like. Spend an evening after dinner discussing the possibilities with your husband and children. And even then you don’t have to settle for making money in just one way.
Let’s say for example that you have always enjoyed writing but you have never had the chance to do so. There are features on writing elsewhere on this site and also in our free eBook. You finally start to get the odd article published in various magazines and you enjoy the occasional income you get as a result.
But you may also like to knit, and you decide to start knitting small jumpers and other items that children can dress their teddy bears and other toys in. So you start doing this on a regular basis as well and you can start earning money from both ventures. There is no reason why you cannot start doing more than one thing, provided you have time for them both and you don’t neglect one for the other. You can then combine the two and write an article about knitting for children’s toys or about making money from a hobby.
If you are still stumped for a place to begin, try looking at various resources on this site and elsewhere on the internet. Simply gathering information about how other people have succeeded in making money for themselves will start firing off ideas in your own mind about what you could do. You may also find it useful to read interviews with some of these retired people, because they can give you even more insight into how they have turned their ideas into cash.
And don’t worry if you are lacking in confidence to begin with. Perhaps you could join a group or get together locally that taps into what you want to do. For example if you want to sell your own photographs, join the local photography club. If you want to write for a living, join the local writers’ circle. There are countless craft groups and other associations that provide assistance and advice in all kinds of ways. It could just give you the push you need to make sure you can start earning the additional income you want.
Remember the old cliché about the longest journey starting with one small step. You just have to give it a go. You’re not going to invest your life savings into it so if it doesn’t work, never mind, try something else. If you don’t try you won’t win.
I’ll leave you with another old cliché that you might find repeated elsewhere on this site because it’s a favourite of mine – if you do what you always did, you’ll get what you always got! Go for it!
