Fuel Allowance Saved

No thumbnail specified Prime Minister David Cameron has confirmed that the Winter Fuel Allowance is safe from the government's cost-cutting plans. He has stated that he intends to keep his promise that the winter fuel allowance will be maintained for everyone over the age of 60.
Last year this payment was £250 for the over 60's and went up to £400 for anyone over 80.  This is obviously welcome news for many of the visitors to this site.   However Steve Webb, the Pensions Minister, has revealed that about 65,000 pensioners living abroad received the winter fuel allowance last year.  This cost the tax payer £16 million and almost half the claimants live in Spain with a further 5,000 living in sunny Cyprus.  We wonder how long it will be before Mr Webb questions the provision of a winter fuel allowance to those British expats living in warmer climes, but perhaps £16 million is insignificant in the greater scheme of things.

We ran an article last year in our 'In Brief' section which explained how to go about claiming the winter fuel allowance and you can see a coy of that article here.

If you would like further details about the winter fuel allowance and how to claim it, there is a government website available to explain everything in more detail.  You can access that website through this link.
